When people ask me to describe my style I have a difficult time because honestly, it’s kind of all over the place. I love super feminine, lacey details but I also love edgier pieces like a great leather jacket or a faded graphic tee. I dabble in the boho trend from time to time and I also love a good sophisticated trench and beret combo. I may not be able to categorize my fashion sense with ease but if there is one word I would use to describe it if I had to it would be colorful.

Your girl loves bold prints and vibrant pops of color. Even if I wear all black I have to throw on a bright blue moto jacket or reach for a loud tangerine clutch. I can’t help it, black is for funerals and New Yorkers.

I know for a lot of people, neutrals can feel really comforting because you don’t have to figure out which color combos work, you won’t stand out and you don’t have to determine what is and isn’t “your color”.

I get that. But I also think that a great way to refresh your wardrobe is to add in some fun pops of color that you can easily incorporate with the rest of your beige and black core pieces.

If you’ve been thinking about spicing up your style with some color but have no idea how to do it without looking like the human equivalent of funfetti cake mix then check out my tips for styling color below.

IT’S ALL ABOUT BALANCE

When it comes to color don’t feel like you have to dive headfirst into the rainbow, they call it a “pop of color” for a reason. Wear just one piece that’s colorful and balance out the rest of the look with your beloved neutrals. I styled this gorgeous marigold (super on trend right now) button down with black high waisted slacks that are super flattering and anchor the look.

Obviously, I opted to add in accents of navy as well (a muted choice of color, but a color none the less) but that’s because I am a professional so don’t be alarmed. Pick a color you love (yellow and red are huge this season, just not together please!) and use that as your vibrant moment.

LET YOUR ACCESSORIES STEAL THE SHOW

If the thought of rocking a pink striped blouse sends a shiver down your spine then consider adding color to your accessory collection instead.

A pair of funky turquoise tassel earrings, a pretty magenta clutch or a stunning jewel-toned statement necklace can completely uplevel your entire look without overpowering your neutrals.

I love a colorful, structured bag and this yellow top handle is the perfect way to grab attention while also tying in my marigold top.

MUTED COLORS STILL COUNT

Just because you’re trying to add a little more color into your life doesn’t mean you have to immediately pull out the hot pink and neon yellow shades and go nuts. You’re allowed to find a color palette that you actually like and that compliments you. Maybe you’re into pastels or maybe you’re into more muted shades. Either way don’t be afraid to start with something easy, like a muted lavender or pale pink.

This navy blazer and these gorgeous navy velvet booties are obviously not the most colorful options in the world but they’re still mixing up my look and elevating it with some great contrast. Oh and yes navy and black can be worn together. Rules were meant to be broken people.
